After a new mother gives birth, she may encounter some issues with breastfeeding. This is very common and they can seek help from a lactation consultant (LC). LCs are trained to assess and solve problems related to lactation and breastfeeding, such as low milk production, improper latch, nipple pain, engorgement, and other issues. They can also provide guidance on proper breastfeeding techniques, answer questions about lactation and infant nutrition, and make recommendations for products and techniques that can support successful breastfeeding.

During the consult, an LC may recommend new mothers to take lactation boosters which are products that claim to increase milk supply in lactating women. They may contain ingredients such as fenugreek, fennel, blessed thistle, or hops, which are believed to have galactagogue properties. Sometimes a lactation booster can just be something that helps a mother feel good.
Breast engorgement happens to mothers while breastfeeding or even when she is attempting to stop her breastfeeding journey as the milk ducts in the breasts become overfilled leading to painful, hard, and inflamed areas on the breast. Mothers may wish to seek the help of a professional who can help massage her breast to move the accumulated milk towards the nipple, allowing for more efficient milk removal and reducing the swelling. The massage is typically performed in conjunction with other methods of milk expression, such as breastfeeding or pumping so effectively remove the blockage.
