Confinement, also known as the postpartum period, refers to the time after childbirth when a woman is recovering from delivery and adjusting to life with a newborn. During this time, the woman’s body is going through physical and hormonal changes, and she may experience a range of emotions. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) uses herbs in postpartum care, also known as “confinement,” as a traditional practice to support the mother’s recovery after childbirth. In most Asian cultures, confinement ladies or postpartum doulas provide specialized care for women during the postpartum period. They look after the mother and the baby in the period after the birth for usually 30 days or even up to 100 days. Today, women have also the option of going to a confinement suite which is facilities that provide specialized care for women during the postpartum period and they may offer a range of services, including traditional postpartum care, such as herbal remedies, massage, and nutrition guidance, as well as more modern amenities.
